Comments on 50,000 New Books

I voted yesterday. I'm still *very* divided. I finally decided on A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle, but Adam Of The Road and A Door In The Wall were both very influential in starting my addiction to books.

What books did you decide on, Becca?

Vote again today!

I picked Charlotte's Web, but probably should've gone with Little House on the Prairie. There were a thousand books read by Mom before either of those, though, that really turned me on to reading. Wish I could remember the early favorites.

I wish I could remember the title of mine. It was a sci-fi book about some kid who discovers this weird egg-like device that enables time-travel. Afterwards, I was forever hooked on sci-fi and fantasy.

Jeremy, that wouldn't happen to be The Green Futures of Tycho by William Sleator, would it?

And, Becca, I totally agree with the LIW Little House In The Big Woods. I think the one that hooked me was Farmer Boy, but I was already into it by then. FB fired me up, but LHITBW had me hooked.

However, I do think I was already hooked on / addicted to books by then. The parents had bought those Teach Yourself To Read accelerated books that start simple and get harder shortly after pre-Kindergarten. A few years after that and I'm reading Newbery winners. I loved the LIW series though.

I love this campaign. I chose Where the Red Fern Grows. That was the first book I ever cried over.

I voted for Anne of Green Gables. I'm not sure if it was the one that got me "hooked", but it certainly is one of my favorites. I love Anne's spunkiness, and yet her loving and loyal spirit. I recently re-read the entire series, being in need of some literary "comfort food". :)

I voted for "Lord of the Rings". I can still remember being a rather small child sitting on my father's lap listening to him read this book to me. My father could read a book aloud like no other. He would always use differnet voices for different characters and would add amazing sound effects. I don't suppose I understood much of the book but I have reread this so many times that I think I have caught up. It is still my favorite. I have to say though that if I could not have voted for LOTR, "To Kill a Mockingbird", would have been my choice.
