We got a shout out on Shutter Sisters today! How cool is that?!! Just last night I was surfing the site, clicking away on each contributor and making mental notes on the contents of their camera bags. Shutter Sisters is an inspiring site for me, so it’s exciting to get a mention from them. They’re also hosting a giveaway each day of December. So stop by, look around, and maybe win something!

December 9
I made an agreement with myself that I’d only buy regular coffee—and then spruce it up with Splenda and creamer and various flavors found in free shakers at coffee shops. I promptly forgot my agreement with myself and have enjoyed numerous lattes since.
But today’s drink, an Espresso Truffle (mmm), was completely legit and myself couldn’t get mad at me for this one. Hello, sweet gift card/birthday present. You provided guiltless caffeinated pleasure on a windy and cold December afternoon. Thank you, dear giver of aforementioned card. And thank you, Starbucks, for not carrying “rainbow” cookies, because then I didn’t have to share my present with my daughter. (Kidding, kidding. But not really.)
December 5
My birthday is tomorrow, but yesterday I received a stellar present: Canon Rebel XS. It is so cool, so fabulous, a really awesome birthday gift from Jeremy. (Thank you, thank you, thank you!!) I’ll continue to use my Powershot S1 IS for brief outings with Livia and for shooting short movies. But oh my goodness, I’m already having loads of fun with the dSLR. I have a lot to learn about photography… and I’m certain the world will see it all in action here on the Prairie Box.
**About my Powershot, which didn’t really die but was only mostly dead (ah, what would we do without the Princess Bride? Anybody want a peanut?). While checking out cameras at a local shop, I was informed that Canon would repair my camera for free—no warranty needed. So I packed up my camera with a repair slip, paid a small fee for insurance coverage with USPS, and sent it off to see what happened. Within eight days, my camera was returned with a new optical something-or-other (see how much I have to learn) and a repaired lens. It also came back with a wonky zoom but at least I can use the camera again. Thank you, Canon!
DPP Headcount
There are at least 109 of us celebrating the month of December by posting photos to our blogs. Isn’t that cool? I’m excited that so many of you are enjoying the DPP and taking advantage of a “project” that allows room for creativity and intentionality. Continue to surf through the blog list to the right and encourage one another to keep on snapping away and posting the results.
Speaking of that blogroll to the right… A huge thanks to my husband Jeremy for keeping everything running smoothly—without his help the DPP would be a much quieter, less organized affair in 2008. Also, what’s up with the letter A? Popular, isn’t it? We have a bevy of Angelas, a boatload of Jennys, a bunch of Jamies and quite a few Kristins and Loris, too. We are by and large a group dominated by estrogen, but the male participants are clearly holding their own.Stop by a new blog tonight and cheer someone on. Happy shooting, everyone!
December Photo Project: Q&A
Questions regarding DPP:
- “Does it have to be a picture you took on THAT day?”
- “Do we just post them to our own blogs?”
- “I am not really a very good photographer, and I don’t know how to use the camera very effectively. Still, I am tempted. But wary. Do I really want/need to add this to my December???!!!! :) On the other hand, one doesn’t need to blog if one doesn’t want to, since one is posting pictures every day.”
Hmmm.
Answers:
- [Big smile]
- The general idea is that you allow others to see the month of December through your eyes—and that you challenge yourself to:
- Post every day through December 25 and
- Use your camera on a regular basis
So nope, you don’t have to take a photo every day necessarily. I do (except that time I was in the hospital…) take pics every day, but that’s just the way I like to do it. And yes, you do post it to your own blog. I’ve had blog-less friends in the past who simply posted them to the Flickr group site (TBA).
- I definitely think you should join up! This is a very lightweight and fun blog project with guidelines, not rules. Most folks I know don’t end up with 25 posts by the end. No guilt though. Just fun.
December Photo Project 2008
The December Photo Project is back for the fourth year!
Come one, come all. Grab your cameras and join me in a photography challenge for the first 25 days of December. Snap a picture each day and show the world what you’re looking at! Drop a comment on the Prairie Box or email me privately, and we’ll list your blog under a December Photo Project heading off to the right once December rolls around.
The excitement begins December 1. Join us! (And stayed tuned for more info about a Flickr Pool… We might use the same one from last year or perhaps I’ll create a new one.)
Favorite Shots: Looking Back Because There’s No Going Forward Yet
I’ve noticed that mothers like photos of their children that others may not understand. I am no exception. There are other shots in this series that are easier to like, but I absolutely love this one. Livia has an air about her, a tousled-hair-tired-kid expression that makes me look at her in a new way. I snapped this shot 18 months ago on Father’s Day (note the tattoos) when Livia was, apparently, all tuckered out.
Winnie
Good Monday morning! I present to you, for your bloggy viewing pleasure, some of the last non-purple photos from my Canon Powershot. I now have within my possession two more cameras, loaned with generosity from my mom and the Moreheads, but I still feel like I’ve lost a body part with the death of my camera. I’m slow to make decisions that require spending a large chunk of money and yet I really need to make up my mind soon. Ack! Moving on…
World, meet Winnie, my parents’ 3-4lb half Bichon Frise/half West Highland Terrier/full canine cutie. She’s crazy about the outdoors, nibbling on Livia’s pigtails and cuddling with on anything connected to her Mama Claudia.
Livia sees Winnie cuddling and figures she needs a bit of lovin’ too. In the shot below, notice that Liv is telling a story. Her pointer finger is out and Nana is wearing her I’m-listening-to-your-very-serious-story face.
The following photo is the last one from my camera. It is blurry and not so great, but still, I love the delighted look on Livia’s face. She placed little Winnie in a little basket and was quite pleased with herself.
The Day the Music Died
This is what death looks like.
My sweet little Canon Powershot S1 IS saw no tunnel, no white lights. Rather it saw a dark screen with horizontal purple lines.
RIP, my small, silver friend.
(Let’s hope the blog doesn’t die as well.)
