Backlight equals, quite simply, light from the backside of your subject. You used backlighting in several of your shots from this post: http://burdenofglory.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/a-little-perspective/. (I liked the technique then, still like it now!)
Hmm. Thought it was harder than that to understand. Your picture kind of looks like “sidelight”.
