CNN is giving away a home theater system if you are the lucky guesser who fills out the Oscar ballot correctly. I suppose film fanatics might have educated guesses about the award winners, but I’d have to be the luckiest guesser alive to win this thing. I did see all five best picture nominees — and yet, who’s to say my tastes align with those of the academy? Correct ballot or no, the best part about next Sunday night is Who is there, What they’re wearing, and What they say in their speeches. T-minus seven days and counting…

Drink Deeply

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings,
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light. (Ps 36:7-9)

Odd Creations

Every once in awhile I like to create my own words or phrases. But the oddest thing happened this morning — I created a “word” in a dream.

In my dream, I was involved in creating a weekly variety show at our high school and a girl came up to me and said there would be a few UnsatisfActs in the program. She explained that the UnsatisfActs could be speeches or skits expressing dissatisfaction with a person or event. We’d have the chance to read the speech or skit prior to the variety show and make sure they were appropriate.

Then I woke up and laughed at myself. My guess is that UnsatisfAct came from my CineMinistry comment left on my neighbors’ blog last night. Hehe.

Is this the lady of the house?

When someone calls, introduces themselves, asks how are you, Mrs. Tredway?, then says,

Boy, it sure it nice to finally talk to someone with a friendly voice…

…hang up the stinkin’ phone. You know who buys things from telemarketers? People-pleasers. [Internal voice] Hmm… This guy sounds like he’s had a rough day, so I can listen to him just a little longer. Plus, disabled veterans suffering from agent orange, attention deficit disorder and eczema MUST need my support, right? [End internal voice] The people-pleasing days are over. Boundary lines have been drawn. And my name is on the Do Not Call registry. So, even though your charity may be legit (yeah right), a phone call is not going to convince me to write a check. Hang up the phone!

Everybody Raise a Glass

I went searching for a photo of my little brother to put in the new Zion Church pictorial directory… and truthfully I had a tough time finding a good picture! It’s not because Andrew isn’t photogenic; the problem is that he always hams it up for the pictures I take! And though I love to tease him, it would just be cruel to put a really silly picture in the directory.

Someday I’ll make a slideshow entirely composed of fun Andrew pics. It’ll have the shot of him in a freezing river in northern California, looking somewhat like a overgrown otter. And maybe I’ll throw in the amusing picture where his facial expression accidentally looks demonic (always entertaining). And perhaps I’d include the cutest picture ever, when Andrew (age 4 or so) allowed his big sister to dress him up as a butterfly, complete with a black leotard and paper wings. Enjoyment guaranteed. But for now, on this lovely Monday, lift your glass to Nooneebischooni, the kid who can always make me laugh.

PMS Rant

If I could take one phrase out of the American vernacular, it would be the one dealing with “sugar shock.” I just read a movie review that described the film (“50 First Dates”) as too sweet… enough to send you into sugar shock, “pass the insulin.” Stupid, stupid, stupid. I also had a professor at Covenant once use this phrase; then, after class, he pulled me over and apologized. Now really, I didn’t need the apology — it didn’t hurt my feelings in the slightest. But because he apologized, I began to think of the dumb phrase as somehow being offensive to diabetics. In all actuality, it is a stupid saying that DOESN’T MAKE SENSE and is only slightly offensive. Sugar doesn’t send people into “shock” (and it sure as hell doesn’t send a non-diabetic into shock) — if there is way too much sugar combined with the worrisome presence of a byproduct called ketones, a diabetic could go into a coma due to ketoacidosis. So why is the phrased used? Who knows… I guess it just gets passed on by those who don’t realize how lame it is.

Friends 2

I just don’t this this spin-off is going to make it. The summaries I’ve read so far sound like Joey is doomed for failure…

Sweet Kids

I love this picture of Cadence. Granted, the lighting is all softened because my flash is broken (I’d love to claim credit for the “mood lighting” but alas I cannot). Cadence is one of the most entertaining little ones ever… She is 10 months old and learning new things all the time. Her new baby language is completely incomprehensible (expect for the fact that Jeff & Julie are positive she can say, Here ya go!) and so gurgly that it is quite impossible for someone with fully developed vocal chords to imitate it. She loves paper, rattly toys and dancing. Every time I see her I just want to squeeze her. Cadence = cuteness.

This is one of Jeremy’s favorite shots of Nathan, half of the adorable Nickeson duo. The boys and I dropped Jeremy off at the Odell’s house to help Steve & Jen Allen pack up their U-Haul, then headed over to Holmes Lake on a beautiful summery Saturday. There’s not a chance anyone at the park would’ve mistaken me for the twins’ mother… I anxiously followed their every move, determined to not lose one to some child-snapping maniac. Fortunately, I also got to take a few good pictures.

Final shot. This photo of Andrew, the other twin, makes me laugh. After he climbed the stairs, I quickly stuck my arm through the purple railing and haphazardly took this picture. Andrew just looks so cute, swinging his arms and smiling on his merry way through the jungle gym maze.

I never thought I could love kids as much as I love these three. I’m fairly certain it’ll only be my own children that will someday outmatch my adoration of them. Really, friends’ kids are the best, though… You play games, watch them look cute, laugh at their naughtiness — then pass them back to Mom and Dad for the hard stuff like discipline and potty-training.

Grammys

7:04 Is it my imagination, or is Beyonce channeling Tina Turner tonight? Yay for the appearance by Prince, love that Purple Rain.

7:07 Don’t like Quentin Tarantino. I think I’ve been too influenced by negative reviews for “Kill Bill, Volume 1”. Ummm… hello? Soundbooth guy forgot to turn off Quentin & Gwen’s mike during the voiceover. Oopsie.

7:12 Eclectic is the name of the game tonight. Sting, Dave Matthews and Vince Gill — tribute to The Beatles. Tre bien!

[Commerical Commentary: Do you think Justin Timberlake sincerely believed Janet Jackson had a red bustier under her right bra cup? Hmmm… JJ has taken the bulk of the rap for the, ahem, wardrobe malfunction. Whatever the truth may be, the Grammy’s sure are capitalizing on Justin’s fame tonight.]

7:20 Through the fog, Christina Aguilera. This girl is naturally pretty, so I can’t help but wonder why she allows nappy hair and the enormous fake eyelashes. However, sister can sing!

7:33 Everyone, take a moment with me to be totally amazed at how something as beautiful as Liv Tyler could have come from the genes of Steve Tyler. Okay, back to the show… Was the Outkast guy in the little boy’s room when his name was called? Surely his seat isn’t that far from the stage! He gets the award for Brief Speech of the Night with a quick, but poignant, “Thank you.”

8:14 My brain craves more than just this show, so I am no longer stationed on CBS only. But I just flipped back to catch Christina winning an award, and oh, please cover up, or use double-sided tape, or something. Yikes.

[CC: I just heated up my rightovers from Buzzard Billys. By the way, “rightovers” are delicious leftovers, usually from a restaurant. “Leftovers” should be reserved for homemade casseroles and the like. For the record, I now like exactly two dishes from Buzzard Billys. Also, Gillette’s new commercial, aired first during the Super Bowl, really stinks. Re-e-eally stinks.]

8:40 I really like this Black Eyed Peas song (Where is the Love?) for some reason. I think it’s the plucky background instrumentals. The lyrics bring me to a few questions… Who doesn’t want peace? Who doesn’t want love? Yoko Ono encouraged us to love and peace — but obviously it’s just not that simple.

[My first ever Grammy report ends here. We popped “Lost in Translation” into the DVD player, cracked open another bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies, and moved on with our lives. Oscar Best Picture Nominees: four down, one to go.]

(clearing throat)

check this out to experience an odd combination of maternal concern and slight horror. oh. and consider this fair warning: you may not want to want to read the entry below on food at the same time.
