Dippy Love

Posted on Jun 16, 2004 at 10:16 AM in Uncategorized

Hee hee… Jeremy and I mimicked a cell phone commercial last night on our walk around the neighborhood. The subsequent photo (not posted here) shows him warily looking around, to make sure no one is looking. Such love, such sacrifice! My husband of six years willingly places himself under the Dip sign for my amusement. Isn’t he great?

As we enter summer, two thoughts are on my mind… 1) Summer television is horrendous! There is nothing decent worth watching on poor man’s cable. (If you know of anything interesting, email me pronto.) My favorite reality show ever, The Amazing Race, usually airs in the summer months. Alas, this year it’s set for the fall line-up. Wait… Wait a minute… It’s not set for fall, it starts July 7! Yippee!!! TAR aside, tv right now stinks. Which leads me to 2) what can we do for FREE this summer? There’s only so much time one can spend gardening, walking around the neighborhood, and playing board games. Your suggestions are welcome!

Here’s wishing you all a happy Wednesday. I’m gonna go look at the Dip picture again for a good chuckle.

i should’ve included a jazz in june disclaimer… i listened to last night’s musician on the web and made my decision accordingly. sign me up for movies on the green though!

its not really about the music (though that’s good too). but the people you run into. :)

the “dip” photo makes me laugh… A LOT!

Yeah, the jazz last night was, as I pointed out to our group, “Hy-Vee jazz.” I wasn’t a big fan, but it was more about being outdoors on a gorgeous summer evening, with friends, playing cards on a big picnic blanket.

Ditto to the movies on the green recommendation. I’m bummed that I won’t be around to catch any of them.

Also, as far as TV recommendations, now is your chance to catch up on all the reruns of the best new show last year: Joan of Arcadia. CBS, Friday evenings. Try it; you’ll like it.

Do you get the WB channel? there’s 3 episodes of Simpson’s and 2 of Cosby every weekday! We don’t get cable at all…this channel is just part normal reception, so you ought to get it. We don’t really watch TV, rather prefer movies, of wh. an unlimited amount can be budgeted quite easily through Netflix.

And if we’re waiting for our current Netflix to come in the mail, Chris and I get hours of entertainment reading aloud to each other. The Wrinkle in Time series being the recent favorite. Also did Harry Potter aloud…very fun.

There’s also GOING to the bookstores and reading books that you don’t have to buy (like the novels that take you 3 hours to read)…then you can sit in someone ELSE’s air conditioning.

short stories are also nice read-aloud-ers

Hahaha! I keep peeking at the blog today just to see the pic, and it makes me laughity laugh laugh laugh.

Good news on the tv front, one of my coworkers tells me that my little Dom is going to be starring in a series on Fox this fall. I may just have to make an exception to being morally opposed to everything on Fox. :D

And, hey, have you been playing Settlers without me again?

  8. rebecca Jun 16, 2004 5:20 PM

i probably won’t watch joan b/c fridays are usually reserved for relaxation and fun with my husband (the term “date night” is annoying, even though that’s what it is!). not a simpson fan either, though i do like cosby. diber, i just finished reading A Wrinkle in Time a few days ago! now for the rest of the series…

nae, i was gonna tell you about dom! i just found out yesterday that he’s in this show called “lost.” (uh, is jason cool with the “my little dom” thing yet?) ; ) and nope, we haven’t played settlers without you… jt won’t play with just me!

Well see, you can tape JoA on Fridays, then you’ll have it handy for when boredom strikes during the week! Perfect!

Also, A Wrinkle in Time is by far the best of the series. Alas.

Try as I might, I don’t find ANY of the hobbits the least attractive (in or out of hobbit garb).

  10. Renae Jun 16, 2004 6:09 PM

RT, I agree that the term “date night” is annoying, though I’m not really sure why I think so.

B, I like the term “Hy-Vee jazz.” Years ago I discovered I didn’t like “nervous jazz” especially, but, to be honest, jazz in general–though it was a hard thing to admit since it’s not all that socially acceptable to not like jazz. I feel cultured-ly inferior. However, I do like the outdoorsness and people-seeingness and roommates-make-me-picnicness of Jazz in June.

But hobbits not attractive? Say it isn’t so! Have you not seen “Fellowship of the Cast”?

JM, Okay, seriously, I’ll stop. :)

i like big band-y jazz and rock jazz and blue grass-y jazz, but not the easy listening stuff. but the picnics and social fun and outdoors nature of jazz in june IS worth it… we just haven’t been that excited to go yet.

_who_ says wrinkle in time is the best one?! someone who hasn’t read _every_ single book she’s ever put out, that’s who! it launched m.l’engle on her successful adult/child genre road, and is dearly beloved, but isn’t — by no means — the best one… continue reading my young starfish.

  13. adam Jun 17, 2004 10:11 AM

bethany’s hobbit comment has led me to alert the authorities. they’ll be coming for you soon… i think it’s the men in white coats this time, so you’re lucky – no more tasers. :)

becca, in omaha, we’ve got shakespeare on the green. and if you’ve got family who owns a zoo membership then you can sneak in for free. do mom and dad still have one? you can get a family membership at folsom for pennies and then get into henry doorly for free. pack a sack lunch.

don’t you have any “recreational” projects that need to be done? like creating a new office, or reorganizing all of your files or something? _i_ have projects! and i’ll feed you! so… it’s the high cost of gas money! and the time to drive.

  14. rebecca Jun 17, 2004 11:36 AM

when is shakespeare on the green? let me know and i’ll join you!

oh, i have projects galore! i’m just way too impetuous and not devoted enough to complete them… scrapbooks, my wedding album, our ENTIRE house, gardens, the list goes on and on. : )

Ahem. I actually have read every Madeleine L’Engle book I can get my hands on (I think I’m missing a couple of her non-fiction books like “The Things in Heaven and Earth” and “And It Was Good”). I don’t think that Wrinkle is her best book overall, but of the “time” series, it’s by far my favorite.

  16. Jeannette Jun 18, 2004 5:53 PM

I would vote for _Swiftly Tilting Planet_ over _Wrinkle_ in the time series. I thought the plot was developed more and had more suspense.

  17. Jeremy Jun 19, 2004 11:22 AM

Given the topic of sci-fi/fantasy, I would normally pipe-in. However, it’s been over 20 yrs. since I read the Wrinkle series, so my memory is lacking and my opinion is propbably skewed. On a side note, I just finished the Otherland series, by Tad Williams, and would recommend it to all fans of the genre.
